This looks good to me. And yes I think serialVersionUID does need to be updated.
However I see a dozen places elsewhere in the api module code where
Throwable.getCause() is being called, so they would also need to be somehow
fixed. It's clear that no-one has tried to run this on java 1.3 for a very long
time..
