The pom does deliberately specify plugin versions in order to ensure
repeatability. And when I see a new plugin is available, I sometimes
update the version number on the principle that it must be better..

Looks like one of those plugins does need a newer version of maven,
either because of a newer feature, or it needs a bugfix in the core.
Sounds reasonable to me; stuff does improve. 

But it wasn't any deliberate attempt to sabotage your system I'm
sure :-). I guess we could hunt around and find out which plugin it is,
then try using an earlier version of it. But IMO I think it's time you
upgraded your maven version :-)
