One of our users, Rémy Petit, has written a Guide for Calligraphy using
Writer and Draw. It's here

It's not yet finished and still in French, but gives a very good and
detailled overview of what can be achieve using these tools, I was quite
impressed even by the graphics :)
The Perl OpenOffice::OODoc project has also evolved during this last
month, you can find it here (in English)
