This is a proposal for a Native Language Confederation
Project in Tetum. Tetum is an official national
language of Timor-Leste (East Timor), the other being
Portuguese, and the language codes ISO/DIS 639-3 tet.
It is regulated by the National Institute of
Linguistics.

Statistics indicated that some 60% to 80% of the
population use Tetum, 40% to 20% Bahasa Indonesian, 5%
English and 3% Portuguese (see: Judicial System
Monitoring Programme, "The Impact of Language
Directive on the Courts in East Timor,
http://www.jsmp.minihub.org/Reports/jsmpreports/Language%20Report/LanguageReport(english).pdf).

Whilst many civil servants and literate members of the
population are familiar with either Portuguese, Bahasa
Indonesian or English, having a Tetum OpenOffice
variant will obviously provide great assistance for
the majority of the population and for the future of
this young nation.

Active support for the project will be sought through
existing contacts in Timor Leste's Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Cooperation. The proposed NLC project does
not address a language that is already represented by
a prior NLC project. Participants agree to abide by
OpenOffice.org guidelines and policies.
