I wonder about the wisdom of Java IDE wars. Anyway, I’d say the unique
features of NetBeans are:

— NetBeans is simply a GUI on top of the command line, e.g., it is a GUI on
top of the Maven command line where other IDEs have their own abstractions
and complexities to force e.g. Maven to work in the IDE. Same for Gradle —
in both cases the pom.xml and Gradle build file are recognized and the
folder containing them can be opened and no import process is needed.

— NetBeans is an Apache project driven by its community, where the others
are commercial projects tied to companies or to the Eclipse Foundation
which is very different to Apache. (Apache projects are driven by
individual contributors, while Eclipse Foundation is pay-for-play.)

— NetBeans is the original Java IDE and still used by James Gosling, one of
the key people in Sun who incorporated it into Sun.

Thanks to the Apache process and the strength of its brand, NetBeans had by
far the most stable future. Indeed, the quarterly cycle, created completely
by its community and especially 11.1 release manager Neil, is a sign of its
strength and promise.
