The grey splash should be gone after
https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1246, but only for new NetBeans
installations (with a fresh user directory).

Subject: Problems (minor) with NB 11.2

Hi all,

You certainly have been busy this year. Congratulations for completing release
11.2.

I apologise for this rather long and rambling post but these things have been
bugging me for some time.

Things not right with Apache NetBeans 11.2 (Although many of these have been
present since NetBeans 9.0/10.0)

My systems, for info:

MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)

Product Version: Apache NetBeans IDE 11.2
Updates: NetBeans IDE is updated to version NetBeans 8.2 Patch 2
Java: 13; OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM 13+33 Runtime OpenJDK Runtime Environment
13+33
System: Mac OS X version 10.13.6 running on x86_64; UTF-8; en_FR (nb)

Also, I have installed:

NetBeans: 9.0, 10.0, 11.0, 11.1 and 11.2 Java VM's: adoptopenjdk 8, 11, 12 and
13

• During Boot-up:

The Boot dialogue box does not function correctly. After the first install
boot, only a grey box appears until the process is almost complete and then the
contents are shown for a couple of seconds or less.

• Installed plugin modules are no longer displayed.

Only the initial selection that come with the IDE show up. Anything selected by
the user are simply removed from the 'available' list but don't appear in the
'installed' list, with the result that it is not straight forward to remove or
disable them, it has to be done manually.

The last version where this worked correctly was NB 9.0. However, in NB
11.0 LTS on occasions a 'Module Manager' has appeared in the Tools menu under
the Plugins component (but alas no more!)

• The about box needs to be resized.

On both my systems, the graphic element is far too large, with the result that
the information about the installation does not fit correctly. This could
easily be sorted out by giving more space to the text box, less to the graphic
element and, reducing the font size to allow the text to fit without the need
for scroll bars.

• Customize Toolbars.

Under the Project category there are duplicate entries for: 'Execute Java
Shell' and 'New File'.

• The 'Restart IDE' nbm.

This works but is not automatically imported (because it has not been tested…).
I've added it to every version of the IDE since 6 (I think) and it has always
worked and, in my opinion should be included in the IDE by default (I find it
to be one of the most useful).

• Installation etc.

I have noticed recently much discussion about the difficulty of installing NB
11.2 under macOS 10.15. Reading these posts, I note that macOS users may be
unfamiliar with certain tricks to by-pass the security system and that
documenting them may not help.

Possibly so, but, I can find no instructions of how to install NetBeans on
macOS or any other OS on the Apache NetBeans website. When doing an internet
search, there are some references in other, un-associated, websites, but not
where, in my opinion they should be. In the "Getting Help" page under a section
'Installation and Setup', before anything else.

Let me clarify this further. When I say 'install' I also include the 'initial
setup' that is required to produce a useable application. This is particularly
important for 'new' users of NetBeans. As a long time user, but no expert, I
find myself fumbling around trying to remember what I did for the previous
install. The procedure is not clear at all.

I would be happy to try and rough something out for this (but I would need help
with other OS's) as I am now able to spend time to continue revising the Java
SE tutorials that I was working on before I lost access to the internet due to
a massive network failure.

Regards

Jeremy
