Just checked the code, that NPE is a possible scenario, it shall be
fixed in 11.3-beta2.

Also the Preference dialog reappeared after clicking OK (I believe this has
been reported already). In fact I had to click OK three times total to get
it to go away for good. All I did was open it to switch the LAF to flat
dark -> Apply -> OK -> dialog reappears -> OK -> dialog reappears -> OK
