Does the auto save only save when there are changes or anytime changing focus 
(i.e. and possibly no change present)?

This is probably a different feature but was curious ...in Eclipse there is a 
local history that is maintained overtime with new versions each time a save is 
made locally which allows some visibility to changes not yet under version 
control (i.e. git, svn, etc.). Although if this was added if not there assume 
all the auto save could expand the number of entries.
