Ok, cleanup is now incorporated from today's review.
1. logs exceptions caught in `createAttributes()`, since normal processing
should prevent attribute calls from throwing the "unsupported operation"
exceptions.
2. filtering in `scanDirectory()` is consolidated.
3. debug `println()` and `flush()` calls remove from ListFile and
TestListFile.
