    @JPercivall I'm a little confused here about the GC implications.  We're 
not creating a new object with this assignment, just reassigning (a copy of 
[1]) the same reference to the variable.  In that case, we're talking about 
either 4 or 8 bytes on the stack, not a heap allocation. [2]
    
    Is there some Java documentation somewhere explaining how this is worse 
than a null check?
