You can add a custom counter very easily using ExecuteScript:

/* ECMAScript */
flowFile = session.get();
if (flowFile != null) {
    session.adjustCounter("SampleScriptCounter", 1, false);
    session.transfer(flowFile, REL_SUCCESS);
}

The performance may not be optimal, but you can experiment with counters
immediately.
