You could also opt for a comma separated list of key/values. Hadoop Configuration offers a convenience method for that: http://hadoop.apache.org/common/docs/current/api/org/apache/hadoop/conf/Configuration.html#getStrings%28java.lang.String%29 Then all you need is split by colon.
