Patch rebased against trunk.
The same comments apply as before.
I've set a fix date for this for 1.11 as it is a frigging major change for the
soon to be released 1.10 :)
Would be appreciated if folks could test this patch out, I have been crawling
with it and it is looking OK.
I will keep rebasing it off of trunk based on ongoing development.
