I have reviewed both patches. They look great. I'm tempted to commit them and
continue working from there while leaving the issue open since this is a lot of
code and doesn't break any existing functionality it only adds new
functionality. If there are objections I will do this shortly now that we are
maintaining multiple patches that are huge.
