Commit messages are actually significantly more messy to work with than Jira
to assemble sensible release notes, and this for several reasons:

 * The granularity is smaller, you have to filtrate through all the
meaningless commits (like javadoc typos, import cleanup or Maciej's world
famous straddlers). Could be manageable with just a couple of committers but
for us it's a bit of a headache.
 * There's not much to point out, people interested in a given fix aren't
very appealed by a commit log.
 * Lack of context, a Jira issue can live (i.e. Alex can correct my
misinterpretations due to me reading the ticket too quickly) and the
resulting comments sometimes have value.

So as a whole, even if being minimalistic has advantages, I believe Jira
exists for good reasons :)
