Scott,
If I understand right, what you are suggesting is to
1) Use freemarker to fix the bug.
2) Create Jira issues for fixing bug in menu widget. Once menu widget bug is
fixed we can comeback and remove use of freemarker and use menu widget based
rendering of menus.
