I think you can safely use another doctype, but never tried...

Can anybody tell why HTML is used instead of XHTML for the doctype?
Have there been any problems (because it's commented out)?
Because of this, self-closing elements like <br /> are replaced with <br> and therefore ecommerce pages don't validate against
W3C.
