Pierre Smits commented on OFBIZ-198:
------------------------------------
In current functionality, manufacturing is executed in a facility. In most
setups both manufacturing area and inventory area are in the same facility (the
plant, the premise, etc).
In that scenario, this issue is not a problem.
However in the scenario of doing manufacturing in a different facility than
doing inventory management there are other aspects.
In such scenario inventory goods can (and must) be physically and
administratively moved through transfers. This business process could be
regarded as internal ordering (with requesting, approving, delivering and
accepting). All this is covered in the transfer functionality in Warehousing
application (contained in the product component).
Auto scheduling transfers would add to the complexity of the Manufacturing
function. Given obvious delay issues and options to choose from (when with
multiple warehouses), this would create extra complexities in the business
process and in the technical solution. E.g. how to deal with transfer handling
cost. These should add to the production cost. And how to handle scheduled
production runs?
So, my suggestion is not to do this (for now). Also given that this aspect is
more than 8 years old and not been requested to be resolved by other community
members or worked on.
But facilitating a button to do suggest transfer request would be easier
achievable.
As for running the MRP against multiple warehouses: this could/would be
applicable as it fits with JIT aspects, but still the costing factor should be
addressed.

> Manufacturing and warehouses.
> At now, all the manufacturing processes are implemented considering only one
> warehouse (facility).
> So, for example:
> * a production run is created for a facility and so it stocks out the
> components from the facility and it stocks in the manufactured product into
> the same facility
> * the MRP is run against one facility
> It would be nice to extend the manufacturing processes to deal with more than
> one facilities.
> So for example:
> * for production runs, we could auto schedule inventory transfers from/to
> warehouses and the manufacturing facility
> * for MRP: we could run the MRP against a group of facilities (where the
> facilities are associated with different roles: main warehouse, secondary
> warehouse, manufacturing facility etc...)
> This task is a rather big one, and I'll not work over it in the short term,
> but it's nice to have an issue to remember this.
