There are 2 separate items in this bullet point. I'll talk about the second,
updating jar versions.

I have discovered that ofbiz is using hc.apache.org(HttpClient), and commons-httpclient. The former is the newer, rewritten, rearchitected,
replacement for the latter.
hc.apache.org(HttpClient) was introduced with https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-3180. I also created
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-4430

org.springframework seems to be at some 4.x version. Ofbiz has 3.1.
birt is using date-based jars from 2010 and 2013.

jdom in ofbiz is 1.1, but 2.0.6 is available.
Only JDOMException is used in images related classes
junit is 4.10, but 4.12 is available.

httpunit was last release in May 2008; xpp3 was last released in November 2006.
I could go on. This is based on reading the top-level pom.xml in OFBIZ-6271,
then doing some quick google searches and finding the download pages.
There are also many jars that have no version at all in their name.

Finally Maven proved to be useful :) But I remember some cases we needed to change our code because of changes in the libs. It was never hard stuff
but still we had to get our hand dirty.
