Hi Chris,

Many thanks for your encouragement and advice for this project.  You'll
already know about both of these, but for the benefit of other folks on the
mailing list, below are links to the JIRA issue for this project [1] and my
GSoC proposal that I submitted today [2].  Hopefully everyone should be
able to view the proposal.  As I mentioned in a comment on the JIRA issue,
since I've already participated in GSoC last year, it's less likely that
I'll get accepted by Apache this year.  But either way, I'd like to attempt
the project as it would be great experience for me.
