As others have already mentioned the 3. What should a PM tool do is the most interesting part (for us). See more later in my reply. > Temporary outline for my diploma thesis "Open-Source tools in > Projectmanagement" (it will be in german!): > > 1. General > 1.1 Open Source > 1.1.1 What is Open Source > 1.1.2 Advantages of OS > 1.1.3 Disadvantages of OS > > 1.2 Projectmanagement > 1.2.1 What is PM > 1.2.2 Tasks of PM > > 1.3. PM-Software > 1.3.1 What is PM-Software > 1.3.2 Functions of PM-Software As I see it there are to types of project management tools: 1. Generic applications used for project management like - Wordprocessors - Spreadsheets - Email clients - Browsers - Calendars - Databases - Journaling systems - ... 2. Project Management specific tools - Project planning software - Project controlling software - Project information software - ... > 2. Existing OS-PM-tools > 2.1 Which tools are there > 2.1.1 List of all (!) OS-OM-tools If you find tools which is not on my list http://proj.chbs.dk/ then please notice me ;v) > 2.1.2 Standard-Software with PM-functionality > 2.1.3 Groupware with PM-functionality > > 2.2 Which tool is the best (only covering the best 10? tools) > 2.2.1 Strenghts / wearknesses > 2.2.2 What to use where > 2.2.3 Comparison to "closed software" > > 3. What should a PM tool do > (alternative: 3. Which PM-tools are used in different companies (not only OS)) The alternative does not seem to be a part of the rest of the outline. Either you should only look at open source PM tools or you should look at all PM tools in the thesis. I would also put the "What should a PM tool do" before analyzing the project tools so you know what to look at in each tool. It is very problematic to analyze the Strenghts / wearknesses when you don't know which should be considered what. I would look forward to read your thesis - even in German though I haven't read German for years.
