[~satishsaley], I've looked around in the Spark code. The Spark version is
stored in a package object.
It can be reached like this:

import org.apache.spark.package$;
...
System.out.println(package$.MODULE$.SPARK_VERSION());

It's there for both
[Spark1|https://github.com/apache/spark/blob/branch-1.6/core/src/main/scala/org/apache/spark/package.scala#L46]
and
[Spark2|https://github.com/apache/spark/blob/branch-2.0/core/src/main/scala/org/apache/spark/package.scala#L91],
but it's intended to use for internal documentation. It might not be a good
idea to build upon it. Getting the information from the manifest seems more
reliable at the moment.
