having problems downloading the geronimo-*-SHAPSHOT-jar files. Here's the

Yes, if the files aren't in your Maven local repository then you're out of luck to compile OpenEJB.
You can ensure that the website where the files reside is indeed accessible using your web browser. There're two repositories Maven will ask for files before it fails: http://www.ibiblio.org/maven and http://www.openejb.org/maven (@see project.properties)
I think it happens as CodeHaus.org is upgrading their servers, and problems with a connection to them may pop up.
