Yep. http://trac.openlayers.org/ticket/658 "Vector layer does not work with Google" http://svn.openlayers.org/sandbox/crschmidt/slowvector/ adds support for the SVG renderer to work on Google. Something solving this problem will likely make it into 2.5. In the meantime, working against the slowvector sandbox should fix this for you, though I haven't checked it switching back and forth between Google and WMS.
