For future reference: not all browsers were created equal. When
talking about performance it would be really helpful if you gave on
indication of the speed of the system you are referring to and the
browser you're testing on. Without this information it's very easy to
talk past eachother.
I'm just comparing more mapping APIs on same platform - no matter if old machine or new. The problem is in implementation. On old machine the difference is only more significant.
At some point you mentioned IE6 on a 5yo machine. If you had mentioned
that upfront it might have been helpful. I'm not sure how many
developers here have such a platform.
I wouldn't say this about users - and applications are for them, aren't they?
