The server can also send VML to the client. That's how it works in IE.

Indeed. But it doesn't use OpenLayers ! :-). At FOSS4G one of the
GeoMajas guys and I had a chance to talk a bit. In GeoMajas, if I
understood correctly, the server sends SVG to the client (as opposed
to sending GeoJSON, GML, etc.). I'm now wondering how this can work
with IE!
