For Web Feature Service: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wfs A WFS protocol, hooked up to a Vector layer, will construct valid WFS requests and send them to the server.
For Web Map Service: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wms The protocol is used for tiled maps. An OpenLayers WMS layer will send all the right requests.
