Hi Eric, thanks for the response. The only ticket I found would be http://trac.openlayers.org/ticket/2707, which does not include a patch. There are other tickets (http://trac.openlayers.org/ticket/2707 and http://trac.openlayers.org/ticket/2706) which address the write()-method, but AFAICT ignore the read()-method.
If there is consensus about the suggestion in #2707 (add the possibillity to control the return type for GCs), I'd give it a shot.
