90% of what was in 1.8 were performance enhancements. The biggest change you'd see (other than a speed increase) is with the widgets search changing to inline searches. But if you use the fieldgen tags correctly you wouldn't have to change anything.
Upgrading to 1.8 shouldn't be off the table.
