Very strange. According to the "svn blame"/"show annotations" tool, that attribute was added waaay back in changeset 6704. I would guess it was meant to do the same as "changeDatatype()" and should be in conceptForm.js, but I don't see it even in 1.6.x, I don't know why the demo site isn't showing you the error.
