Hey All,
This message is directed towards the potential Google Summer of Code
students. I have on most of your proposals strongly urged you to use the
SMART Criteria for Project Planning technique
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria> to draft your timeline for
your proposal.
The first task you need to do is figure out the goals, deadlines, and
what measure defines that goal as "completed."
Then after you've done that write them down, when I did it I did it this
way:
SMART Goal #1:<brief description of what it is that needs to get done>
* Measure: What defines this as being completed? For example maybe
having the feature working and fully tested?
* Maybe go into detail more using some more bullet points.
* Deadline: *This is important* as SMART goals are time-driven! They
are supposed to be manageable.
You should do this for each goal. Try and break your project down as
much as you can, your mentor can help you do that. Definitely try and
plan for two major milestones: *midterm evals* and *final evals*. These
are very important times of the program, they determine if you get paid.
The point of all this isn't to drive you nuts, it's to aid you in
implementing your project. Your goal with your proposal is to show your
mentor that you know this project and can implement it sufficiently--it
won't be perfect!
I hope this helps you all.
