Argh - sorry, I should have read
https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/docs/Step+3+-+Install+Tomcat, where
it states that a Tomcat not later than 6.0.29 should be used.
Installed it and the issue 1) is resolved with that.

However, still leaves my question about 2).
