You may have found HAPI more pleasant less "castful" if you used the Terser<http://hl7api.sourceforge.net/base/apidocs/ca/uhn/hl7v2/util/Terser.html> (example<http://hl7api.sourceforge.net/xref/ca/uhn/hl7v2/examples/ExampleUseTerser.html>from the HAPI by example <http://hl7api.sourceforge.net/devbyexample.html> page) or if you weren't the poor person trying to handle all types & versions of message at once. :-) (Of course, an API auto-generated from a specification is never going to be the most pleasant experience.)
