Hi all,

You probably have seen Kevin starting a discussion of the UX aspects of the new sidebar feature. I will be working on the implementation of the sidebar. In the hope of motivating others (you) to join me, I have created a wiki page that gives a first and rough outline of the work that has to be done and the API and code that already exists and (hopefully) can be reused or adapted:

    http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Sidebar

At the top of the page there is resources section that links to the UX work already done by Kevin, the Symphony sidebar, and bits and pieces in AOO that already provide some of sidebar functionality.

Please feel free to comment or update the wiki page directly or do anything else that helps making the sidebar a cool new feature.

I am currently working on three things:

- Compiling the new "sidebar" branch that has the code activated that Frank Schönheit wrote a little over a year ago. This is an incomplete version of a sidebar but you can already see an icon bar and an empty container for content panels. I hope that I can reuse this code.

- Compiling the "symphony" branch so that I have a basis for analyzing the Symphony sidebar and see how easy it will be to integrate its content panels into AOO.

- Continue to find and analyze the AOO code and API that can be used for the sidebar.

As you can see, there is work enough for everybody. If you would like to help, please speak up.

Thanks,
Andre
