Please make a sample file: Start OpenOffice, open a new Writer file, type DT,
press F3 key and you get a paragraph of dummy text. Now Save this (in .odt
format). Does this reopen correctly?

If not, start by deleting or renaming your OpenOffice User profile. If you are
using Windows do this by:
Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Rename
the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.

For other operating systems detail on the User Profile are given in
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=12426

If that does not cure the problem, a corrupt OpenOffice installation is the
suspect and you should download a fresh copy of OpenOffice which should be
downloaded _only_ from
http://www.openoffice.org/download

This site will redirect you to a SourceForge site and your download will start
in about five seconds with no need to click on anything else (Do NOT click on
anything else).

One can and should verify that the downloaded file is as it left the code
factory by the methods described in
http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html

If the test shows that you can make, save and reopen a fresh file using 4.1.2
but not files created by the earlier version, Try deleting or renaming the
OpenOffice user profile (as instructed above). Uf that does not work, have the
earlier files been transferred from another computer or restored from a backup?
What format was used to save them (three letter extension)?
