I think by making a request to Apache to change the icons of Writer and
other software, they may agree.
For clarification: The decision is made on this list. And we decide
together. That is the way.
The Apache Foundation is the body that enables us and stewards this project.
I recommend to start of with one icon. And then discuss that. This will
give us an impression on what your taste and skill is and you will see
the taste on the existing participants.
We have to figure a community solution that works for all involved.
I know the licenses but I don't understand why I couldn't offer Apache a
new logo.
The Apache OpenOffice Logo is part of our trademark. Trademarks are
legal documents, that provide us rights if we clash with other
companies. That are not our rules. This are the rules Companies play by.
Since a lot of people have interest in the market name OpenOffice, Logo
is nothing we can easily change. I hope you understand that this is a
difficult topic, and has nothing to do with your proposal or person. So
lets see if we can agree on the other things first. If a trademark is
running out we can have a discussion on the logo for sure. This will
happen in some years.
All the best

It's a shame... The logo is much too flat, not dynamic enough.
OpenOffice is therefore not entirely free.
I think you don't understand trademarks... ;-)
The source code is free. You can build it with whatever graphics you
want to use.
But you would need to find a new name for it, since you wouldn't be
allowed to call it OpenOffice.
You could change the toolbar icons, while leaving the icons identifying
the suite and the applications untouched.

Thank you for the icon pack proposals, they should be modified to

PS: I created the icon-logo of OpenOffice for the moment, I just
added a
gradient but I find that the logo is too flat.

The OpenOffice Orb is a trademark. It is unlikely that it will be
changed in the near future.

If what you consider doing is a remake of icons and appearance,
I'm
sure all would welcome this; it would be good that one could
switch
between one them and another, so that the older theme was also
available.
BTW: The "Industrial" icon set is still missing a lot of icons...
Idea: creating a new set of icons with this resource
https://iconoir.com/
This does not refer to Industrial, I think?
But we do have enough icon libraries to choose from, it just needs
people to do the actual work. ;-)
