assuming that your 10,000 shapes don't need to be _separate_ entities, another vector to speed things up would be to create one huge shape, which contains 10,000 polygons (again assuming uniform fill and line attributes across the 10,000 items). Or generate a metafile (WMF, EMF, CGM or SVM) of the ellipses (there, you can even have them differently attributed), and add that as a GraphicShape. > 2.
