Matt,

what fonts are you trying to install? I am using FC4 and installed the
msttcorefonts rpm and have no problem using fonts, in fact I didn't even
have to run any commands to get the fonts recognized like on FC3.
The package I put everything under /usr/share/fonts/msttcorefonts.
