To my mind, he means that understanding OpenOffice.org code is
impossible because of unordered coding. To this point, I would answer
in two parts: 1 - This coding is not unordered, fortunately ;) 2 -
Even non-free products of 8 million lines of code are like spaghetti.
He is speeking in the same position as me : looking for the first
time at the code. However, he apparently didn't make any effort to
understand the code organization as I am doing.
I guess Goulde's and your reasons for looking at the code organisation
are different, so perhaps the approaches differ too.
I recognize that I needed and still need some help to understand some
difficult points, but who can say that he has a global and precise
understanding of 8 million lines of code ?
Goulde's title is that of "analyst of software infrastructure". For some
reason I thought he had some special or clever way of being able to view
millions of lines of code and make some sort of judgement. But I guess
if it was that easy, we would all be doing it :)
But what code is Goulde looking at to write-off 8 millions lines of
code as spaghetti?
I may be using my own pink glasses, but if people are using the
APIs and a lot of the code is C++, is it spaghetti?
Please can you tell me that if in your opinion the OpenOffice.org
is spaghetti, if not the whole, which parts, and why?
If you are not a developer, please sit on your hands :)
I hope my opinion could help, event if I am a new small developper
mostly using the URE.
Thank you for your reply Cedric. It is most appreciated.
It would help me further if you were able to let us know how you did go
about understanding the code organisation. For example, many of the
resources are now collated on http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/
Were or are any of these helpful now and or when you were getting started?
Also, what OpenOffice.org projects and mailing lists do you utilise to
develop using the URE?
Thanks again for your help.
Regards
Jacqueline
