Could someone give pointers to the roots of this whole issue?
Why were we checking in a win32 dll into CVS and why do *nix builders
have to care?

I communicate my opinion of the whole thing in the issue already. But again, the unowinreg.dll is used by the UNO simple bootstrap mechanism under Windows and it is shipped with UNIX SDK's as well to be able to develop cross platform Java applications using the simple UNO bootstrap mechanism. Otherwise a Java app developed for example on Linux won't work under Windows :-(

We checked in the binary because this dll will probably never change and when we are able to rebuild it on windows and check in the new version. There is no need to rebuild the binary and from my point of view the whole issue is completely nonsense.

If somebody would change the source code, the binary would be changed as well. Ideally in the same source module as it was. Now we have the situation that people copy/download the dll from somewhere use it in their own builds and maybe don't be aware of any changes.

The whole issue came from some extreme views and i like the comment from Volker

"Breaking stuff for the greater OSS good is always easy, but _we_ are
trying to maintain a cross-platform product here and have to show some
tolerance."

LOL:
the reason being (cited this time): "it's a principle to build stuff
out-of-source and not ship prebuild things"

I think I need to upload that log somewhere...
