In the KDE project we solved the problem by applying the United Nations 
terminology. According to that, "Israel" was "Israel" and not "Occupied 
Palestine" like it is used in some Arab states, Taiwan was no state but a 
(dissident) part of China, etc.

That's probably a "safe" decision since it prevents from arguing sensitive 
topics and leaves that responsibility to the UN.
