I thought I remembered the first time this question came up, and, sure
enough: --

http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=users&msgNo=4725

dates back to June 2002.

In those days, there were only 1468 bugs outstanding, and, according to
Oliver Specht, seven people working on Writer within Sun.

Reading that thread, in the bright light of hindsight, explains why I
really don't believe that open source is a volunteer activity any more.
One way or another, OOo is pretty much good enough for most things now.
But I no longer expect any of the well-established bugs to get fixed.
There just aren't the programmers to do it. So I no longer bother much
with reporting things or with QA.
