I've no idea. Just discovered it by accident.
In a discussion like this one, but then on the Dutch list, most people
found the same behaviour in their mail clients :-)
It certainly
works with Thunderbird. I had never heard of such a thing being used to
quickly scroll down without focusing the message outside of the view panel.
Maybe it's even in the Help ;-)
(Oeps, 5 pages keyboad shortcuts in my old Mozilla suite).
