Hello,

I have a problem where my file associations for OOo (on Windows XP Pro) stopped working. This is the associations for OOo file types, not MSO file types.

I am a seasoned windows admin, and yes, the FIRST thing I tried was to re-associate the file extensions using the 'Open with...' trick...

It did not work - the file opened, of course, but the association does not stick (yes, I checked the 'Always open using this program' checkbox).

Besides, this really is not a satisfactory solution to this problem, because it won't work properly for TEMPLATES. When you associate a Template in this manner, from then on OOo simply OPENS the template file DIRECTLY when dbl-clicking on it, rather than opening it as a template file (ie, opening a new, blank document, then copying the contents of the template into the new/blank document)...

Anyway, I'm about at my wits end...

As a last resort, I have tried re-installing OOo (yes, as Administrator) at least 4 times, to no avail...

I recall some time ago (years?) reading about using regsvr32 to manually reset these...

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

This is very frustrating, and just illustrates how badly [the windows version of] OOo needs to have a file associations manager built in - I really don't see why this should be so hard, especially with all of the 'OOo has converted all of my MSO files to OOo' complaints (yes, it is their own fault, but beside the point).

All this utility would have to be able to do is:

1. Reset the file associations for all OOo file types (including templates) so that they work properly,

2. If the user elects *not* to allow OOo take over the file associations for MSO files at install time, provide a simple method for taking them over later, if the user decides they like OOo enough to do so,

3. If the user elects *to allow* OOo to take over the file associations for MSO files at install time, record the current file associations, so that the user can easily reverse them if desired,

4. Provide a simple interface (call it - gasp - 'File Associations') that allows the user to do 1. anytime it may become necessary, and a way to switch MSO file associations back and forth (between what they were before/when OOo was installed, and being associated to OOo).

It would also be very nice if these file associations could be set on a per-user basis (don't know if that is even possible in Windows though).

Charles
