But even if this was the case, you still could fix that illegal
character in the source and *then* add patch sets for whatever fixes you
need in addition.
That was the first thing I tried. I took me several hours and after the help from ause, we figured out that patch failed with this text file which contains an illegal bytes at this position we want to patch. And patch failed.
I'll created patches when jfreereport switch to next stable release. Hopefully that is in the near future :-)

Will that make it for 2.3? If no, that's no help.
