SO just keeps the *original* version of each patched file. This is to be
able to deinstall the patch again and then get a working unpatched
version. Without that deinstalling the patch would leave you with a
totally useless, damaged SO.

That is an unfortunate side effect or the patching process (others would
call this a bug ;-)).

The insall script won't do that as I described. In case any user will
try to do it manually: be aware that this will kill your SO installation
in case you deinstall the patch. I never tested it but it also might
prevent you from installing further patches as they usually first
deinstall the old patch and if something goes wrong there (because the
original files that shall be renamed back aren't available anymore) it's
possible that the setup breaks and you will have a complete mess.
