[dev] extending openoffice

hi,
im in the need to extend openoffice and use it as a part of larger scale
commercial software project.
at the moment, im not sure the path i should take to start this project. can
i just checkout (or download) the source, modify/add stuff, build
and distribute to customers? or is there a specific way of doing this?
please advice me on this.
