Hi,

Following the protocols for project proposal, I would like to propose
the promotion of the User Experience (UX) project to become an accepted
project.

User experience engineering is an essential part of the product
development cycle. About one year ago, the Sun UX team 'went open
source' by starting the user experience project on OOo
(http://ux.openoffice.org).

A lot has happened since then. The project has attracted ~70 project
members and ~80 subscribers on its main mailing list. About halfway back
in our short history, we conducted a short survey to find out about the
level of satisfaction within our project, and to identify the most
important gaps [1]. We worked on some of the issues, but quite honestly,
there still is some way to go - the project isn't 'done', and I doubt
that it will ever be. But most of the basics are well defined: we
drafted a short 'how to join us' [2] (available even in Bengali!), the
communication infrastructure [3] is in place and being used regularly,
and we work on documenting the standards of our work and our interaction
with the rest of the OOo project. There is a lot more about us on the
wiki, to which you easily get when you start at our web home page.

Developers from across other projects contact us when they work on UI
relevant issues, and when they need UX assistance in other tasks. The
collaboration isn't perfect yet, but our successful participation in
many development projects helps us to continuously improve our
relationship with the *entire* developer community. In most of the
projects we have been involved with, we not only developed the visual or
interaction design, but significantly contributed to essential steps
like requirements analysis. The typical deliverables everyone knows
about, that are mostly created by UX folks, are specification documents.

So as a bottom line, UX contributes significantly to the overall product
development process. It is as essential as QA or documentation.

That's why I propose to promote UX to an accepted project.

Please give me your thoughts on this (which might be as simple as '+1'
... ;-) )

Thank You.
