Novell and Sun have been working together to provide support for these
file formats. The work is still ongoing (currently in the xmlfilter04
workspace) but is definitely schedule to be integrated into an OOo
release.

What Novell has done previously is to ship the odf-converter, which is
Microsoft sponsored OOXML to ODF conversion filter, written in XSLT and
C#, as a temporary solution.
Also Novell has been shipping pre-release of the code jointly developed
with Sun in their 2.4 branch.

Hope that clarifies your misunderstanding of the situation.
