Dear Sir or Madam:

Some weeks ago, I have installed the developmental version of OpenOffice 3.0 on my computer. Today I wanted to report some fault or shortcomings, I have found during the last days. However, I have found it difficult, to find the right address for this on your webpages, which are confusing in this and other respects.

With regard to that version, I have to say, that I have, so far, not experienced major problems with it, but found among others the following shortcomings:

General:
• The colour palette is a major problem:
(1) It is a little small and lacks certain common colours, e.g. there is no real orange and the only «pale green» is actually a pale cyan. (2) I have so far not been able to locate the file, which means, that I had to create the additional colours anew each time I used a different computer or had installed the program completely anew. There should be a file called «palette» or the like at a ‹logical› place, and it should be possible to add not only colours to this pallette, but to create own, alternative palettes, which can be used simultaneously. (3) There should be a standard, automatic procedure for naming added colours, which names them after their composition, e.g. «R: 000 + G: 255 + B: 127» were the number are taken automatically from the values set for the three basic colours. These automatic names should be editable, if wanted, of course.

Base:
• There should be an «Import» function e.g. for importing spreadsheets as tables. Albeit this is already possible through copy & paste, it is difficult to find the way to do this. • When importing spreadsheets from Calc with number which are displayed in unusual ways, e.g. with a space as thousands separator, these numbers are not recognized as numbers, that is, are replaced by zeroes if one sets the field type as numeric instead of text (varchart).

Calc:
• It would be gould, if an easier, clearer, programming-like way for creating own functions would be implemented, accompanied by a sufficient manual. • One should e.g. be able to define calendars and similar lists in an rather easy, clear way. • In the 2.x versions, there were, I think, problems, when opening or importing or copying & pasting e.g. files with numbers with a dot as decimal separator, when in the program this separator was set to be a comma, or the like. I do not know, whether these problems still persist ...

Writer:
• In the 2.x versions, I had problems with links in websites. They often did not work for unknown reasons. • One should be able to replace fonts in the whole documents by a respective dialog, where one can choose the font to be replaced (e.g. one which is not installed) and the font by which it should replaced. • There seems to be a problem to reset a text to a style feature from which it has been ‹exempted›: E.g., if I a text has the style "default", but has been set in a font different from that one, and shal then be reset fully to "default", this is not possible directly (but maybe via a different style).

 . . .
